REPRINT OF THE FIRST DUNDEE REGISTER FOR 1783.
We have before us a reprint in facsimile of the first number of the "Dundee Register" or Direc- tory, which was published in the year 1782 Wo believe there is only one copy of the original known to exist, and it is from this unique volume that the present reprint has been prepared. I he quality and kind of paper and style of type i of the original have all as far as possible been rigidly adhered to. The edition has been limited to 100 copies, and, as showing the interest taken in the quaint reprint, n.arly all that number hare ' been already subscribed for. The few remaining copies will doubtless be eagerly sought after by local antiquarians and others interested in the history and progress of the town. Mr A. C. Lamb, who owns the rare original, has made ! its republication a labour of love, and has bestowed an amount of attention in securing an exact fac

DUNDEE REGISTER,
For the Year 1783.
An Account of the Town of Dundee, &c.
DUNDEE, the AUclum or laodunum of the antients, is a well built flourifh- ing town, in the fhire of Angus, or Forfar, and ranks as third of the royal boroughs.
It is feated on the north fide of the ri- ver Tay, about eight miles from its mouth, in W. L. 2. 48. N. L. 56, 26. It is very advantageoufly fituated for commerce. Trad- ing veffels of a large burden can get into its harbour. There are convenient and hand- fome warehoufes built in 1756 ; and alfo a good area for fhip building, which has been carried on to a good extent. The houfes are built of ftone.
The High ftreet is a very fpacious oblong

Murravgate, which, with feveral leiler ones, have all been lately paved. On the fouth fide of the High ftrcet (lands the Town- houfe. It is a noble ftrufture of architecture, and was finifhed in 1734. ^ contains two elegant rooms, one of which is ufed oc- casionally as a mafon lodge and affembly room ; the Baillies Court-Room, Poft- office, Bank-office, and vaulted repofitory for the records. At the eaft end of the ftreet is a Trades-hall, lately erecled : It contains a very large and well finifhed room, and nine lefler ones, for the ufe of the nine incorporations Three eftabliihed churches, befides feveral chapels and meeting houfcs, having been found infufficient for the in- creasing number of inhabitants, a hand- fome new church has been lately built in the Cowgate, on the north part of the town. There is alfo a magnificent fquare Gothic tower or fteeple : it is now feparated from the other buildings ; but was formerly a part of a venerable and fuperb building of churches in the form of a crofs, erefted by David Earl of Huntindon, brother to Wil- liam I. of Scotland, and was dedicated to the Virgin Mary. This he did on his third crufade (in which, with 500 of his country- men, he had accompanied Richard I. of England, anno 1 1 89), in gratitude for his deliverance from feveral imminent dangers, and particularly from fhipwreck, by which he had nearly perifhed when in view of the place.

Ac this period he changed the name of the town from AleSium to Dcidonum ; and under this name we find it increafing eon- fiderably in the 13th century. The de~ ftruction of the churches adjoining to this tower, was the work of Edward I. of England, that barbarous deftroyer of mo- numents and records. He was fo enra- ged that the inhabitants mould oppofc him, and aid his inveterate foe the famous Wallace, that he fet fire to the churches and town, the flames deftroying all but a part on the eaft fide, now called the Old Kirk. The town fufrered very much about the middle of the lafl century ; for jull fix years after it had been ftormed by Mon- trofe, it was beiieged in form by General Monk ; and although it. made a gallant defence under Lumfden, it was at laft car- ried by force on the ift September 1651, when all that were in arms were put to the fword. There were above lixty veffcls in the harbour at that time. In order to enable the inhabitants to recover from thefe calamities, and to repair their har- bour and other public works, Charles JI. granted them a excife of one third of an Englifh penny upon every gallon of ale or beer fold in the town for twenty-five years. This act has been continued by five fubfe- quent acts At prefent Dundee is in a very ftouri filing ftate ; manufactures go on bnfkly, and there are near one hundred fail of fhip- ping belonging -to the place. The feveral

manufactories coniift of linnen ; (efpeciaily Ofnaburghs), fail cloth, cordage, threads, ftockings, buckrams, tanned-leathers, (hoes, and hats. A fugar-houfe has been erected lbme years ago. The Ofnaburgh trade is the ftaple, of which there has been above four millions of yards annually flamped of late. Threads have been long famous in Dundee, and are now manufactured to a large amount, employing ibout 3000 peo- ple. The inhabitants are reckoned to be about 16000. There has lately been built an excellent new quay for the common pafiage, and which accommodates travel- lers, in palling at all times of the tide. And a new ftreet leading to the more has been lately opened, which promifes to be of much fervice. The town is well and plentifully fupplied with water and all forts of vivres, and has an excellent butchery market-place, lately built.
